AVENIDA DE LAS AMERCAS
To the West of Avenida de las Americas is Discovery Green Park, which is Houston’s most exquisite park besides Hermann Park and Memorial Park, and by far the best in Downtown, both in terms of size and amenities and features.
Discovery Green is a prime example of successful urban planning and tasteful landscaping, informed by energy-conservation and sustainability considerations. Billed as an urban oasis, it serves many distinct purposes and caters to diverse interests and tastes. In addition to the open green space and vegetation that is must for any urban park, it features a playground for kids, two walkable water fountains, a dog park, and a large lake with boardwalk. Discovery Green is also an open-air performance venue with a covered stage (Anheuser-Busch Stage) which is fronted by a small grassy hill with gentle slope for spectators on blankets or in lawn chairs. Many other types of events and exhibitions are staged throughout the year.
Kinder Lake is adorned with water lilies and lined with tall grasses. A section is converted to an ice skating rink in the winter. Two restaurants can be found on site: The Lakehouse, with patio seating next to the water, and The Grove, with is next to the garden and a walkway lined with trees. Several pieces of art are permanently installed on the grounds, while nonpermanent displays provide visual variety over the course of the year, sometimes quite spectacular.
